immunityIt seems that everyone I speak to lately is under the weather. While there are many tips and remedies for naturally healing illnesses, today I want to share some ideas for boosting immunity so you can ward off illness before it knocks you down.

1. Reduce stress. The long and short of it is that increased cortisol = decreased immunity. If you notice stress levels rising do be sure to participate in activities that help you decompress (e.g. slow, diaphragmatic breathing, yoga, relaxing, being creative, spending time outdoors, etc).

2. Take your zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D3, selenium, and probiotics. If you aren’t getting enough of these nutrients, your immunity will suffer.

  • Take 15-50mg of zinc daily – the higher dosage is good for when you are actually under the weather.
  • Take 1-2g of vitamin C daily – tip: split it up into 500mg doses so as to not have an adverse GI reaction.
  • Take 2,000IU  of vitamin D3 regularly. You can up the dose if you feel something coming on.
  • Take 200mcg of selenium daily.
  • Take probiotics regularly in the morning, twenty minutes before eating.

3. Eat a diet rich in vitamins and nutrients. Fill your plate with organic veggies, fruits, proteins, and a good balance of fats.

4. Try coconut oil. Instead of putting olive oil in your pan to saute veggies, use coconut oil instead. Or put a tablespoon of coconut oil in your smoothies. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is known to ward off foreign invaders and keep you healthy.

5. Spend time with others. Research demonstrates that spending time with others (including pets) can reduce stress and bring joy to our lives – two important components for a well-functioning immune system.
